Orientation to teaching in the USydMP
1 - 2 hours
Workshop will be held on-site at Clinical Schools
This workshop will be led through small group activity and facilitated discussion using the USydMP curriculum website
and participant’s own teaching examples. Participants will be provided with a resource folder containing background literature, workshop notes and activity guides and ongoing access to the USydMP curriculum website and forum to engage with other Faculty staff involved in USydMP teaching, research and support.
This workshop is suitable for any Faculty member who is involved in teaching in the USydMP and is particularly recommended for Faculty new to teaching in the USydMP. Participants will be able to use the orientation to locate their own teaching role and activities within the USydMP curriculum structure.
Participants should engage in the web-based pre-workshop activity and be prepared to discuss at the workshop.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to :
- Use the USydMP curriculum website to situate their teaching role and activities within the USydMP Theme structure.
- Use the USydMP curriculum website to search and locate student learning outcomes for their teaching area.
- Use the USydMP curriculum website to match their teaching activities with student assessment requirements within the USydMP.
Workshop Evaluation Once participants have had the opportunity to implement learning from the workshop, feedback will be sought regarding workshop effectiveness, and opportunities for further learning.
Learning and Teaching in the Clinical Environment
Maximising Learning and Teaching Opportunities in the Hospital Based Setting
2-3 hours
Workshops will be held on-site at Clinical Schools
This workshop would be relevant to clinical teachers supervising USydMP students.
The workshop will assist participants use their experiences to identify clinical teaching strategies that will maximize student learning opportunities in their hospital based setting. Opportunities will be provided to share participants’ experiences and practise skills needed for conducting a clinical teaching session.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify possible teaching opportunities in their setting
- Relate the components of a successful clinical teaching session to their context
- Determine useful strategies for involving the patient and all the students in a clinical teaching encounter
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of feedback in a clinical teaching session (briefly only as workshop 2 concentrates on this aspect)
- Show how a clinical teaching session can be used to encourage further student learning
Resources relevant to the clinical teaching process will be provided in either paper based or online format.
Participants will receive ongoing access (for up to 6 months) to on-line resource materials and forum to engage with other professionals involved in clinical teaching.
Hot to Tell it How it is! Providing Feedback in the Clinical Setting
2-3 hours
Workshops will be held on-site at Clinical Schools
This workshop would be relevant to clinical teachers in the health professions.
The workshop will actively involve participants in a simulated clinical teaching scenario. Opportunities will be provided to share participants’ experiences and practise skills in providing feedback.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of feedback in a clinical teaching session
- Determine who can provide feedback and the appropriate time for providing it
- Discuss the characteristics of constructive feedback and the place of feedback in the cycle of supervision
- Apply components of effective giving and receiving of feedback in own clinical teaching
- Reflect on own practice of giving and receiving feedback
Resources relevant to provision of feedback and clinical supervision will be provided in either paper based or online format.

Designing Written Assessment in Medical Education

Undertaking Performance Assessment in Medical Education
OSCE Examiner Training Workshop
2-3 hours
This workshop would be relevant to Faculty assessing USydMP students in OSCE Examinations.
The workshop will assist participants in assessing students in the Formative and/or Summative OSCEs in the USydMP. Opportunities will be provided to practise skills needed in using criteria to mark an OSCE candidate.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Locate their role as examiner within the structure of the USydMP OSCE.
- Use criteria and global scoring to mark a demonstration OSCE candidate.
- Calibrate their assessment style against other examiners.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of feedback in a clinical teaching session (Formative OSCE setting)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the scoring processes used in USydMP OSCE Examinations.
- Evaluate an OSCE station and overall student performance
The workshop will be conducted by 1 to 2 members of CIPHER with experience in clinical assessment. A local coordinator will be present to discuss site issues for OSCE examinations.
Mini CEX Assessor Training Workshop
2-3 hours
This workshop would be relevant to clinical teachers supervising Stage 3 USydMP students.
The Mini CEX is a new form of assessment of students’ clinical skills being piloted at all USydMP clinical sites in 2007. Mini CEXs are preformed on the ward, in the outpatient setting or in GP settings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate and understanding of the purpose and structure of the Mini CEX in clinical assessment.
- Locate their role as a Mini CEX assessor within the structure of the USydMP.
- Use criteria and global scoring to mark a demonstration student through the Mini CEX assessment.
- Calibrate their assessment style against other examiners.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of feedback in a clinical teaching session (Formative Mini CEX setting)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the scoring processes used in USydMP Mini - CEX .
Mini CEX Assessor Workshops will be tailored to clinical sites. A local coordinator will be present to discuss implementation and resource issues for individual clinical sites.
Facilitating Inter-Professional Learning (IBL)
1 day workshop (10am - 4.pm)
Workshop will be held on-site at Clinical Schools.
This workshop is suitable for clinicians from Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health professions who have a role or interest in student supervision and education. It is also very relevant to University educators responsible for clinical placements.
Participants will be able to use knowledge and skills gained throughout the day to identify opportunities to incorporate interprofessional learning (IPL) activities into workplace student education programs.
The workshop will be led through small group activity, presentations by experienced IPL educators and facilitated discussion.
The workshop will be led by the University of Sydney IPL Team:
Gillian Nisbet, Dr Cheryl Hobbs, and Deborah McGregor.

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to :
- Identify characteristics of effective interprofessional teams as related to a healthcare environment
- Apply understanding of IPL to a clinical/ practice education setting
- Identify benefits and barriers to interprofessional learning in your own workplace education setting
- Apply knowledge of IPL to explore interprofessional learning opportunities in practice
- Identify skills required to facilitate IPL activities using a collaborative learning model
